Mike Whillock is a founding partner of Refine Search. He has nearly 20 years of recruiting and search experience both in-house and as an external search consultant. After many years on both sides of the recruiting desk, Mike came to realize that the external recruiters he was working with weren’t true partners who cared about his company and its goals. It was from that realization that Refine Search was born; a search firm that places clients’ needs at the forefront.
Before Refine Search, Mike cut his teeth in the oil and gas business, leading the recruitment function at SM Energy, a Denver-based exploration and production company. Here, he helped SM achieve its lofty growth goals by creating hands-on recruiting strategies to attract exceptional petro-technical talent in an extremely competitive job market.
Prior to SM, he was the vice president and managing search consultant for a national HR-focused search firm. Mike conducted national searches to find management and executive-level human resources professionals, and also was tapped to lead new development for key markets. Mike’s experience also includes lead recruitment roles for Coors Brewing Company, Hitachi Consulting and Accenture.
On every search, Mike strives to understand an organization’s needs so he can find candidates who go beyond the job requirements and fit into a company’s culture. That’s what keeps him energized — knowing he has the ability to bring clients the talent that will drive their companies forward and achieve their business goals.
In his downtime, you can find Mike mountain biking, skiing and spending time with his daughters, Kate and Greer.
Mason, founding partner of Refine Search, has 16 years of experience recruiting in both corporate and agency settings. Prior to Refine Search, he was the head of talent acquisition and a human resource business partner for engineering at DCP Midstream, a leading oil and gas company.
At DCP, Mason created a talent acquisition division – including its team and processes – to meet the company’s growth plan and workforce needs. Prior to DCP, Mason led the contract staffing business for a national recruitment firm, and also was a talent acquisition lead with Molson Coors and ACS, Inc.
In his various positions, Mason struggled to find a recruiter who could meet his expectations for understanding his industry and personnel needs. He shared the same desire to create a client-centered recruitment firm. Mason firmly believes in taking the time to get to know the nuances of a client’s business before he begins a search. His ability to understand the full scope of clients’ needs — from the big picture to the small details — allows him to bring them the most suitable employees to their organization.
Mason also believes in giving back and has been active with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), American Heart Association, Junior Achievement and the Mile High United Way. With five kids, Mason’s free time usually includes attending their various extracurricular activities and maybe squeezing in a game of golf.
